Curriculum Statement

Speaking and Listening
At Woodbury Salterton CE Primary we promote effective speaking and listening skills; valuing contributions and encouraging active listening and response. Children are encouraged to use language to express ideas, intentions and needs and to respond clearly and audibly. Speaking and listening is an important part of the process, through which pupils read and comprehend texts. They are an essential aspect of all school curriculum and life and are pre requisites of effective learning.

Reading provides children with a door to a lifetime of opportunities for both learning and enjoyment and these are reflected in the provision made at Littleham CE Primary. Reading can help children to make sense of the world through fiction, poetry and information texts. Children are encouraged to read a wide variety of texts and genres, for enjoyment and information, developing skills to become critical and independent readers who value and respect books.
Children will have opportunities to take part in guided and independent reading. Parents are expected to join in the reading partnership between home and school.

Phonics Statement WS

At Woodbury Salterton CE Primary children are encouraged to write with confidence, fluency and accuracy. Children are provided with opportunities to write for a range of purposes and audiences. Writing is often linked to the theme being experienced at that time. Children are taught about grammar, punctuation, text structure and organisation and how to write with a fluent, joined handwriting style.

Mathematics is not only a lifelong skill but…………..fun!

At Woodbury Salterton CE Primary all children have a daily maths lesson which includes an emphasis on mental calculation strategies.

The lesson starts with a session of mental and oral maths, which mainly develops recall of number bonds, multiplication and division facts, and counting in many different ways. The main activity focuses on a particular learning objective, approached at different levels to meet the needs of the individuals. Each lesson finishes with a plenary which may address any misconceptions or extend learning further. This reinforces the aim of the lesson and often gives children an opportunity to explain their work to their peers.

We put the emphasis on children learning to use different strategies and so become more effective and efficient mathematicians. Using and applying their maths skills runs throughout each lesson, focusing on children exploring how they do their maths. The children show great enthusiasm for this subject, which is wonderful to see.

Science for children means exploring, discovering, investigating and understanding the world around them. The characteristic of good science is that it involves children doing things themselves, practically.

As a staff we try and encourage positive attitudes including:

* curiosity about interesting, new or unusual happenings

* co-operation when working with others
* perseverance
* open-mindedness
* self-criticism
* responsibility for oneself
* care and concern for the environment.

Our Science curriculum includes all the attainment targets and programmes of study as laid down in the National Curriculum guidelines.

Religious Education
Religious Education is included in the basic curriculum by law.
We follow the Devon Agreed Syllabus for religious education, which encourages children to respect the religious, spiritual and moral values of others and to consider thoughtfully their own values and beliefs. Pupils study Christianity as a major topic and some aspects of other religions represented in Britain.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from the teaching of R.E. If this is the case then they are asked to contact the Executive Headteacher/Head of Learning.

Physical Education
Physical Education involves children in the continuous process of planning, performing and evaluating. At Woodbury Salterton CE Primary we hope to promote a physical confidence and competence that enables children to move efficiently, effectively and safely.

Through P.E. activities children are encouraged to develop personal qualities of commitment, fairness and enthusiasm. P.E. is also a medium in which we can promote good diet and a healthy lifestyle as we teach about how the body responds to exercise.

Every class has weekly P.E lessons with a sports coach/class teacher. The school hall and playground are used for this. We also feel it is vital all pupils learn to swim and each Key Stage 2 class take part in swimming lessons during the course of a year.

From an early age children experience music in various forms; for example – nursery rhymes, background music, songs and games. We aim, in school, to nurture and build on these experiences in order to develop an understanding and enjoyment of music.

Children will be given opportunities to sing, play a variety of instruments, explore sounds, compose, perform and listen to music from a range of times and cultures.

Our aim is to encourage children to experiment with and show increasing control over a range of materials, tools and techniques. The pupils have opportunities to experience drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, clay and 3.D work. They will make images and artefacts for different purposes and reflect on, adapt and improve their work.

The children are taught how to recognise works of art, craft and design and to study the intentions of the artist and the time and place they were made.

History is the exciting world of the past. We aim to give children the opportunity to learn about the past and the ways in which it differs from their own way of life.

As well as giving children an understanding of past societies and environments we aim to also give children a sense of chronology and the realisation that we can learn about the past from many sources of information.

Geography aims to teach children a variety of skills that will enable them to develop knowledge and understanding about places and, through observations, to make comparisons and express their own views and judgements. Through these skills they will learn about the human and physical features of their own environment and increase their awareness that the world extends beyond their own locality.

Information Technology
The overall objective of Information Communication Technology at Woodbury Salterton CE Primary  is to encourage and promote the use of ICT in as many aspects of everyday school life as possible. Within education ICT is a subject which lends itself to all other National Curriculum subject areas.
Every classroom has an Interactive White Board. The school has a set of laptops  which are used for whole class teaching. Our main aim is to assist children to view computers as one of a range of tools and develop the skills for lifelong learning.

Design Technology
Technology aims to provide the children with early technological experience through solving problems, responding to needs created in their everyday world in the classroom. Children will use materials at hand for a purpose, modifying, designing, making a drawing on a variety of experiences, investigating and evaluating, all in line with the National Curriculum Programmes of Study.

Collective Worship
In accordance with the Trust Deed and the requirements of the Education Reform Act (1998), all children will take part in an Act of Worship, which will be wholly of a Christian nature, unless a parent requests in writing that his/her child will be excluded.

The whole school meets together on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and meet in classes on Thursday. Friday is a celebration and are an opportunity for adults in the school to nominate pupils for outstanding achievements.

Personalised Learning
As your child progresses through the school they are taught according to their needs to develop their skills in all subjects.

Learning is set in class to meet the next step your child needs to develop further. Because all children develop at different rates their learning will also develop at different times. Some aspects of learning will happen quickly and others will take time.

How will my child progress in their learning journey?

Through a carefully planned approach all children are included in the lesson. For example, in our mixed classes e.g. Year 5 and Year 6, all children will work on addition but at a level appropriate to their development and what they need to take the next step to becoming successful learners. We call this aspect of teaching differentiation. It plans for your child’s learning.

Pupils who are making good progress are extended in class lessons.

Special Needs
All children are different and learn at different rates, all have their own individual needs. At Woodbury Salterton CE Primary we do not teach to a class age expected ability but cater for a range of all abilities within each class through differentiation and appropriate challenge.
Some children have Special Educational Needs and need specific intervention. These children are placed on the Special Needs Register after consultation with parents and are given ‘Individual Educational Programmes’ (IEP’s).
The 1981 Education Act determines that: “A child has a learning difficulty if he has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of his age.”

Teachers identify areas of specific need and set targets to support these. Learning Support Assistants are also involved in this process as they play a significant part in supporting children within the classroom. Parents are invited to a meeting each term when the IEP’s are reviewed and new targets set based on progress made during the term.
Intervention groups such as Early Literacy Support, WAVE3 (Reading Recovery Programme) and Wave 3 Maths Intervention programmes are provided for groups of children who may need that bit of extra support in Literacy and Numeracy. These groups are taken by teachers and trained ‘Learning Support Assistants’.
A number of outside agencies support our Special Needs provision and visits are made by the Educational Psychologist and the Speech and Language therapists on a regular basis.
As a school we are continually monitoring our Special Needs provision recognising that children need support in a variety of ways, at different times in their school life and for different periods of time. We are committed to providing early intervention and providing the best possible support for our children. We value the role that parents play in their children’s education and staff are always available if you have any concerns.

The Primary aim is to integrate pupils with Special Educational Needs into the academic and social life of the school and to enable pupils to work to their full potential.

The school’s S.E.N. co-ordinator (SENCO) is Mrs Tweedy.

The arrangements for the co-ordination of the educational provision for pupils with S.E.N. include.

  • Regular meetings between class teachers, support teacher and SENCO.
  • Parental involvement.
  • Individual Education Programmes
  • In class support and withdrawal groups.

The arrangements are the responsibility of the SENCO.

The school SEN policy is available upon request from the school office.

Sex Education
All children at Key Stage 2 will follow a Sex Education Programme. This forms a discreet element of the curriculum as part of Health Education. The school follows the Channel 4 broadcast Living & Growing. The teaching materials are available to view upon request and each year a parents/carers meeting will be arranged to enable parents/carers to view the materials and curriculum.
This topic generally occurs in the Summer Term. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from the teaching of Sex Education. If this is the case then they are asked to contact the Executive Head Teacher/Head of Learning.

Extra-Curricular Activities/ Enrichment activities
At Woodbury Salterton CE PrimaryAcademy we are excited about developing the range of extra-curricular and curriculum enrichment opportunities we offer our pupils. The children benefit from visits out of school and visitors to school in order to enrich the curriculum. Our current extra-curricular clubs include: football, art, Chatterbox and multi-skills.

In addition to this, we have close links with Exmouth Community College, the local secondary school. The children also have numerous opportunities to enrich their learning with through partnerships with other  Exmouth Area Learning Community schools.

Home Learning
We believe that the partnership between parents and school is valuable to develop all learning opportunities.

We ask for your support to help your child to make the maximum progress possible during the time they spend with us. Each class sets learning appropriate to the age and needs of its pupils. To encourage pupils to develop in their work and attitude to learning we are now referring to this support as Home Learning.

Home Learning creates a positive image and encourages your child to see learning in the home environment, that learning is a lifelong experience and can take place in a variety of settings.

Home learning tasks; please provide the important guidance and support for the tasks to be completed. This may be hearing your child read regularly or providing them with a suitable place to complete a task, discussing ideas or providing encouragement at the right moment.

  • Tasks serve several purposes and can often be in several categories
  • Reinforcement of new skills – maths homework providing extra practice of a new idea
  • Learning basic skills – tables and quick recall facts – number bonds
  • Preparation for a lesson – research on a new topic to feedback to class
  • Finishing off – to complete a task
  • Independent research – the opportunity to develop own ideas
  • Practicing – to help memory – regular reading activities

Most tasks include an element of consolidation and practice as learning takes place at different rates for different subjects for different pupils. Learning to ride a bike or drive a car is the same principle as learning to read, write and spell, know all your tables and be able to calculate quickly and efficiently in Maths. All require repetition and practice to get better.
